Curator’s Corner

                 The summer programs of the Thompson Museum have come and gone.  The  2nd annual William G. Thompson Memorial Flower Show and the lost arts on the porch were well attended.  Visitors to the Museum helped to raise over $2,000 , which will help to keep the Museum running!

             The Bean Creek Festival has come and gone.  Celebrations for Hudson’s 175th anniversary were a wet one, but plenty of people had lots of fun.  The Museum was busy with hosting tours, a float in the parade, and assisting the Hudson Museum in running cemetery tours.

             We encourage visitors to stop by and see the new visitor’s center.  The current exhibit focuses on the art and life of Glen Tracy.  Mr. Tracy was born in Hudson in 1883, and would go on to become the “painter of the circus”.  Thanks to the family of Arthur Wheeler, we have several paintings and equipment used by Mr. Tracy for all to see on display.

             The Museum is planning for workshops over the fall and winter.  Janet High of Bean Creek Garden Center will be joining the Museum for:

             * November 22, 2008:  10 a.m. Thanksgiving Centerpiece workshop - $25

             * December 3, 2008:  7 p.m. Wreath workshop -- $25

             * December 6, 2008:  10 a.m. Wreath workshop -- $25

             * December 17, 2008:  7 p.m. Christmas centerpiece -- $25

To register for any of the workshops, or for more information, call the Museum at 517-448-8125.

     Happy holidays from the Thompson Museum!  Stop by and see the holiday lights and outdoor Christmas trees.  Trees have been decorated by:

                                                    * Boys and Girls Club of Hudson

                                                    * Mr. & Mrs. Steve Freeborn

                                                    * Friday Club

                                                    * Girl Scouts / Bean Creek Garden Center

                                                    * Lenawee Co. Civil War Roundtable

                                                    * Rowley, Inc

Thanks to their festive trees and wonderful decorative ideas, the Thompson Museum placed 2nd in the Hudson Decoration Contest this year!

The house will be decorated through the first week of January, so make a point of stopping in and seeing the house.

     Summer is gone and it seems winter is close at hand.  We’ve had a busy time at the Museum and more excitement is scheduled this fall!

The “Great Pumpkin Carve” is scheduled for Oct 31, in the parking lot of the Market House.  Come out and vote for your favorite pumpkin!  All voting proceeds go to the Hudson Food Pantry.

Join the Museum as we welcome Janet High for our popular wreath and centerpiece workshops.  The class schedule is as follows:

                                       - Nov 21, 2009, 10 am:  Thanksgiving Centerpiece

                                       - December 1 @ 7 pm and Dec 10 @ 7 pm: Christmas Wreaths

                                       - December 12 @ 10 am: Christmas Centerpiece

The classes are only $25, which allows you to create your wreath or centerpiece out of the fresh greens and ribbons provided.   In a floral shop, such products would cost well over $35, and best of all you are the creator of the holiday décor!  It is a great project for you to share with your upper elementary or middle school aged children as well.

We are also seeking entries in the Annual Outdoor festival of trees.  Participants are allowed to set up a 6 foot live or artificial tree in the side yard of the Thompson Museum.  Electricity is provided by the Museum for you to decorate your tree and show off your holiday lights at night.

Spring will not be far off and we are planning our annual spring gardening classes.  Look for more information to follow on planting vegetable gardens, butterfly/hummingbird perennial gardens, and even a class on daylilies.

New exhibits will be coming to the Thompson Museum’s Visitor’s Center as well.  This January “Snowbirding in Florida” will open in the exhibit area.  Come explore the tradition of spring break in Florida and other sunny southern locations.  The exhibit is free and open during normal Museum hours.
